|Making a Difference in Botswana
Students are taking their gardening seriously in Maun! Children in the Wilderness launched its first Eco-Club at Shashe Primary School in Maun, Botswana in January 2013. A mere nine months later, this innovative program has not only made a positive impact on the 55 children who are members, but also to the broader community in Maun.
Following a structured curriculum, the Eco-Club meets once a week during the school term. “The reason for the Eco-Club’s success is the unwavering devotion from the children and their keen interest to learn more about their environment and how to care for it,” states Mary Hastag, the Children in the Wilderness Coordinator for Botswana. Learning a range of skills from environmental and conservation lessons, the children have planted and nurtured a thriving vegetable garden! The first harvest was given to the Eco-Club members, but the next harvest will be shared with the entire school. Teachers will buy the produce and the money raised will be used to assist the Eco-Club with further projects.
We look forward to hearing more about these budding superstars and their accomplishments. For more information on Children in the Wilderness, please click here.
